It began with the idea that the studio could be spontaneous, just like the old days when all I had was two synths and a drum machine. The setup is rather simple... Well.... OK.

The laptop is running Ableton Live and a video triggering program. I had an MS20 loaded on there for the bass sound. Prior to filming, I had recorded some samples into the Kaos Pad as well as some strange loops from my radio (you can see its flashing lights). I also sung into the microphone and recorded the sample, "There is no meaning", which I then began to mangle live as I sequenced and affected the audio output of my Maschine...

So yes, this is my room, and it dos look that spacey right now. I love it! Enjoy...

Oh, the camera I used wasn't the best and a few frames were dropped, so it does go out of sync here and there. Could not be helped, as this was all improvised as I did it.

Anything Box | Worth

Worth is the title track to Anything Box's second album, recorded in Germany with Gareth Jones. It was an ambitious album, too. A-Box was there during the war, away from their families, and without a doubt the lonilness of the journey goes through the songs.

Provided with a bunch of snapshots from the recording and the apartment that Claude S. and Dania Morales shared, we offer up the documentation of Worth. Was it justifiable suffering?

Anything Box | Industrial Wasteland

“Industrial Wasteland is among the oldest of all Anything Box songs. It was supposed to be on Peace, but we voted it out. I was secretly thinking it would be on our 2nd album, Worth. That proved to be wrong due to the album’s darker leanings, and although I feel the lyrics in Industrial Wasteland reflected Worth’s sensibility, the arrangements were too poppy. Somehow, the song seems to have remained stuck in 1988, a twist of time and its solid grip holding it to its own retro condition. And yet, I still love playing it. Why is that?”

Anything Box was once described by the Village Voice (NYC) as having “…Some of the loveliest and most cunningly arranged pop music around…” And yet they still don’t receive nearly as much airplay as they deserve. Well, who cares anyway? They certainly don’t. What they do care about (and vehemently so) is the art itself. And they love and revere their fans’ support. And thus here we are.

“This version of ‘Every Single Day’ is the Remix that I did back in 1994. The video was directed by Greg Baird, a college student that Dania knew. We sometimes looked at this one a failed attempt to capture the ‘Pop Rave’ scene that was in Los Angeles. Although we were not part of it officially, we were always invited to play these events. At what was supposed to be the largest, the cops showed up and arrested everyone. Our equipment was thought stolen, but it was later given back to us by a fan that had managed to keep it from the police. Talk about good luck, huh? Oh, the opening bit is at The Roxy in L.A…”

Anything Box | Heaven60

“Heaven60 is a song I wrote about the two absolutes in life: being born and dying. What do we do with the uncertain in-between? Contemplate or experience it? It was also a goodbye to my father who died of Cancer. Aside from that, the meaning is up for debate, which is what songs should do. This was recorded in El Paso at Club 101. The footage was badly damaged, and so I had to re-create the track, using both the vocals from the tape and the original song when the drop outs happen. The extra ‘strange footage’ was pure chance discovery…”

Anything Box | When We Lie

“When We Lie is a testament to how far some people will go to film a concert. The guy who submitted this footage had five friends with cameras at the show, and the footage was stitched together from all the angles that were shot. The audio was restored as much as we could, and it is quite good. I love the girl close-up towards the end. It always brings a smile to my face… This was in Mexico, where shortly after this song, a riot broke out and we had to run for our lives as fans chased us. Dania’s mom was with us, too. She thought the whole riot thing was fun…”

“Yesterday” was an unfair whim of mine. I convinced the band to do it as an encore and it almost didn’t happen. None of them really knew the chords, we had never rehearsed it. Gary and Dave worked out their parts just seconds before and we went for it. I think it is one of my happiest of moments. I am very grateful to my friend Marcelo for having captured this moment in time… We’ve never done it since…”

This is technically not an episode of Fan Tapes and Time Travel, unless of course you consider that the song in question comes from a tape. Not just any tape, but a long forgotten album recorded in one day, back in 1987/88 by Claude. Its inclusion in the series comes from a simple fact: this is the past, here is the present. By watching it, you are time traveling!

The clips you see, with the exception of the film bits, are all paintings and drawings by Claude S. of Anything Box. These also span from that era to now. They are part of an online installation known as 'The Book of Nineteen', which can be viewed in its entirety here: http://www.anythingbox-nineteen.com.

You will also get an entire glimpse of the album as well, which you can enjoy for free as you look into the pages from the book itself. But be careful, these images may induce emotions...

Welcome to Episode 4 of the serialized Anything Box film, ˜Fan Tapes & Time Travel". Using the lens and cameras from fans from all over the world, this film is a time machine. The periods jump from 1988 to the future, and everything in between. Are Anything Box time travelers then? Or are they merely resilient? Only one thing is for certain: art speaks for itself.

Claude: "England had The Batcave in 1988, which brought us bands like Alien Sex Fiend, but New Jersey had The Pipeline, which was a stomping ground that was always open to our experimentation. Emilio was a great guy. I would call him up on the phone, and he would give us a date. Or we would get a date right after we played a show. So it was a sort of home for us. Also, it was the most Gothic and Punk of all the clubs we played, barring perhaps The Loop, which was also (and still is) very special. The Pipeline had a spirit that was amazing.

Imagine my surprise at finding these little gems. This Episode features two songs which we've never released, much to my surprise. They were popular in our sets, and the vampires loved us. That is because we were sort of vampires ourselves. The song Pieces (2nd song on this episode) was supposed to be a b-side to Living In Oblivion, but it never happened because the record company thought it was too industrial. We should have fought for it. The master is out there somewhere. As for Some One's Taken Over Me, it is a song that to this day feels good in a punkish aggressive sort of way.

This show is also the last before we moved to California, and as such holds a special place in my heart forever.

Claude: “This was, at the time, the biggest show Anything Box had done. There was no endpop.com yet. This was a trying period. This was when we were riding the high of Peace and Living In Oblivion, but had just left a major label. The Hope era had just begun, and Orangewerks was an idea waiting to happen. I think Answer Me was a new song…

What I remember the most was that fans had dropped from the ceiling, and we elected to protect them since security was looking for them with tazers. Also, the front doors of the soccer stadium were broken as people came in to the venue. Our road manager at the time and my good friend, Tito, filmed most of this. Oh, I apologize in advance for the clothes. I just wanted to be comfortable. Who knew?”
